
Accomplished playwright, Garret Davis is a North Carolina native, residing in the Triad area of the state with his wife, best friend and business partner, Carol Montague that he affectionately refers to as Monty. His son, Minister Nelson Rashad Davis is a junior at Towson State University in Towson Maryland.
He started his entertainment career in 1992 as the road manager for the New Jersey Mass Choir’s, “Hope of the World Tour”. He then entered the radio industry as station manager of a small gospel station in Raeford NC. He continued to grow and share his talent as Promotions Director at WZFX, Foxy 99 radio and later as Program Director for Kiss 107.7 FM, a major multi-format station owned by Beasley Broadcasting Corporation located in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
Davis has been labeled as one of the most prolific, anointed talents in urban theater and named by NAACP as one of the “Funniest Playwrights in America” (1996) It started when he was bitten by the theater bug during a summer workshop at the Lakeland Cultural Arts Center in Littleton, North Carolina. He founded GDavisplays.com with his first theatrical production entitled, “Lord Why Me”.
For the past fifteen years he has honed his craft to becoming one of the leading playwrights with diverse talents affording him the ability to take on the role of actor, director, producer as well as playwright. His plays have consistent elements that deliver a faith inspired message of hope woven into the comedic dialogues, dramatic life circumstances and spirited musical compliments that delight audiences of all ages. His touring productions have taken him all across the United States and abroad.
Davis’ plays entertain but also have a purpose. He demonstrates his interest in the community by partnering with the Triad Chapter of the Alzheimer Association and PDY&F, Inc. an organization focused on meeting the needs of families with children located in the Winston-Salem/ Fayetteville areas. He has committed proceeds from several of his shows to benefit these two organizations.
Davis is also the founder and President of the Urban Playwrights Workshop of America, an organization established to give young aspiring playwrights the direction they need to be successful in their career. There are currently 150 members and still growing. The inaugural conference of the organization will be held this summer in Raleigh, North Carolina.
